The disease
Diabetic retinopathy is strongly related to duration of diabetes. For example, after 20 years of suffering from this disease almost all type 1 or juvenile diabetes patients, and over 60% of patients with type 2 or diabetes in adults will have some degree of retinopathy.

Laser Treatment for diabetics
Diabetic retinopathy is the condition of the blood vessels of the retina caused by diabetes.
(Top Photo: Fundus of the eye. Vitreous hemorrhage in diabetic retinopathy). The retina is an anatomical structure located in the back of the eye. Its function is to receive light rays from the exterior and turn them into nerve signals which will reach the brain, where they are interpreted. This process allows us to see.
The retina is extensively irrigated by blood vessels to nourish all the cells within it. These cells are highly specialized and are the recipients of the images from the exterior. If the blood circulation in this area is altered, the receptor cells may die, leading to a loss in vision. Diabetic retinopathy is the condition of the blood vessels of the retina caused by diabetes.
Treatment
It has been clearly demonstrated that laser photocoagulation reduces the risk of vision loss, but it usually has no effect on reversing what has already been lost.
